Eastern Region History
In 1933 Zeta Phi Beta was divided geographically by regions and
supervised by Regional Directors. Initially, the four regions were New
England, Middle Atlantic, Southern, and Western.
In 1934 three additional geographical groupings of chapters were
created, increasing the regions to seven: Eastern, Middle Atlantic,
Southeastern, Central, Southern, West Central, and South Central.
These groupings encompassed all states where Zeta was
represented at the time.
In 1945 during the rapid growth of Zeta, Grand Basileus Lullelia W.
Harrison suggested the drawing of new geographical lines for the
regions. An eighth region, the Pacific Region, was created.
The first Middle Atlantic Regional Conference was held in 1935 in
Richmond, Virginia.
The first director under the newly formed Eastern Region was Soror
Carrie W. Michie (Tau Zeta Chapter-Charlottesville, Virginia). The first
regional conference was held in Norfolk, Virginia on May 18-22, 1945
at First United Presbyterian Church.
